INHIBITED SEXUAL DESIRE: WHAT IS NORMAL-FOR YOU? SEXUAL SCRIPTS
We, as well as many other psychologists and sociologists, use a metaphor from theater to describe this organized set of ideas, attitudes, and expectations that direct people as they participate in any kind of complex activity. We call it a script.
Giving direction without actually specifying everything that must be done, social scripts are not written down on paper. And although everyone uses them to guide thoughts and behavior, their existence is rarely recognized. Scripts for sexual behavior help influence how you act now based on what you have learned in the past. These scripts also help you to plan what you are going to do in the future. They do this by helping you define what you do with whom, when, where, under what circumstances, and for what reasons.
Your sexual script contains all the thoughts and feelings that move you to seek out, become receptive to, and engage in sexual activity. You have organized these ideas consciously or subconsciously, and they either motivate you to have sex or convince you not to.
If we asked why people have sex, you could immediately think of several motives, including to experience pleasure, to express love or affection, to feel close to their partners, to have fun or relax. But there are many, many more reasons for engaging in sexual activity and not all of these motives are sexual in nature. They include:
- to gain more control in a relationship
- to capture or retain someone's interest
- to prove your love, loyalty, or commitment
- to prove your masculinity or femininity
- to demonstrate your maturity and sophistication
- to feel good about yourself; to affirm that you are attractive, worthy, lovable, and competent both as a sexual partner and as a human being
- to relieve loneliness
- to reduce tension and anxiety or relieve depression
- to relieve boredom
- to obtain bodily contact; to be cuddled and physically comforted
- to soften up your partner in order to obtain a favor—or to repay your partner for one
- to avoid arguments or uncomfortable conversations, or even emotional intimacy, by switching the focus to sex
- to make up for some transgression or assuage guilty feelings about not spending enough time or paying enough attention to your partner
And finally, you may engage in sexual activity because you believe that is what you are expected to do at that time with that person in that situation. In essence, the other elements of your script sometimes convince you that you should have sex even when other motives are not present.
